Karachi West District: Orangi, Manghopir and the Working City

Karachi Division · Sindh · Census 2023 · Urban and Peri-Urban Landscape

Karachi West is one of the city's most socially diverse and geographically varied districts. It includes the enormous residential communities of Orangi and Mominabad, the historic spiritual landscape of Manghopir and an urban environment shaped by migration, small businesses, transport, manufacturing and community organisation.

The district is also a place where some of Karachi's most important experiments in community development took place. The Orangi Pilot Project demonstrated that local communities could organise and finance parts of their own sanitation and neighbourhood infrastructure with technical assistance.

The 2023 census records 2,679,380 people in Karachi West, making it one of the largest districts of Karachi by population. The district's geographical character is different from the extremely compact central districts because it includes large built-up settlements as well as more open land around Manghopir.

The population is overwhelmingly Muslim, while Christian, Hindu, Sikh, Parsi and other communities also form part of the district's social fabric. The census language data show a particularly strong Urdu-speaking population alongside Pashto, Punjabi, Sindhi, Saraiki, Balochi and Hindko speakers.

First, an Administrative Clarification

Why do some sources say “Orangi District”?

Karachi's district boundaries have changed several times. Karachi West was established as a district in 1972, abolished during the 2000 local-government reorganisation and restored in 2011. Keamari was separated from Karachi West in 2020. In more recent administrative usage, the remaining district has also been referred to as Orangi District.

MyBook.Pk keeps the familiar URL and subject name Karachi West District because it remains widely recognised, while mentioning Orangi District as the newer administrative terminology.

Three Places Explain the District

Orangi: A City of Its Own

Orangi is one of Karachi's most densely populated urban settlements. The 2023 census gives the Orangi urban locality a population of 596,919. Its compact area and enormous population demonstrate the intensity of Karachi's low- and middle-income urban growth.

The neighbourhood expanded dramatically as migrants from different parts of South Asia and Pakistan settled in Karachi. Over generations, residents built homes, shops, schools, workshops, mosques, clinics and community organisations.

Orangi's story is therefore not simply a story of poverty. It is also a story of self-help, entrepreneurship, migration and neighbourhood organisation.

Mominabad: Dense, Diverse and Commercial

Mominabad is another major population centre. The 2023 census records more than one million people in the Mominabad sub-division. Its neighbourhoods include Fareed Colony, Haryana Colony, Bismillah Colony, Islam Nagar, Mominabad, Frontier Colony, Banaras Colony and Peerabad.

The area demonstrates the multilingual character of western Karachi. Urdu is widely spoken, while Pashto, Punjabi, Sindhi, Balochi and other languages are also part of everyday life.

Small manufacturing, workshops, retail, transport services, food businesses and home-based enterprises provide livelihoods for many families.

Manghopir: Sufism, History and the Northern Edge

Manghopir gives Karachi West a completely different identity. The area is associated with the shrine of Pir Mangho, the famous crocodile pond and the annual Sheedi Mela tradition.

The Manghopir landscape is also geographically different from dense Orangi. It extends toward the northern and northwestern edges of metropolitan Karachi, where hills, open land and older settlements become more visible.

Archaeological references also point to ancient settlement in the wider Manghopir area, making it significant for understanding Karachi's history before the modern metropolis.

The Orangi Pilot Project

Perhaps no development initiative is more closely associated with Karachi West than the Orangi Pilot Project.

Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan began the project in Orangi in 1980. The goal was not to wait for a completely government-funded solution but to help residents organise and finance improvements themselves while receiving technical assistance.

The project became particularly famous for low-cost sanitation. Residents participated in constructing household sanitation systems and neighbourhood infrastructure, while technical teams helped with planning and design.

The model later attracted international attention because it demonstrated how communities in large informal settlements could become active partners in urban development.

The Orangi Pilot Project eventually expanded into work involving sanitation, housing, health, education, microfinance and small enterprises.

Famous People, Celebrities and Important Personalities

Karachi West has a different kind of famous-person history from Karachi South. Its best-known figures include development thinkers, politicians, athletes and community leaders. Some were born here; others became famous because of their long-term work in the district. MyBook.Pk distinguishes between those two connections rather than claiming that every Karachi personality belongs to Karachi West.

Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan — The Man Behind the Orangi Pilot Project

Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan was born in Agra in 1914, so he should not be described as a native of Karachi West. His importance to the district comes from his extraordinary work in Orangi.

After an international career in rural development, Khan moved to Karachi and in 1980 established the Orangi Pilot Project. His work in community-managed sanitation, housing, health, education and microfinance made Orangi known far beyond Pakistan.

He received the Ramon Magsaysay Award and later Pakistani civil honours. He died in 1999 and was buried in Karachi at the Orangi Pilot Project compound.

Perween Rahman — Architect of Community Development

Perween Rahman became one of Pakistan's best-known development professionals through her work with the Orangi Pilot Project Research and Training Institute. She worked on mapping, sanitation, housing and community development and helped carry forward the participatory philosophy associated with Orangi.

Her work demonstrated the importance of understanding neighbourhoods from the perspective of residents themselves rather than relying only on official maps and plans.

Arif Hasan — Urban Planner and Orangi Researcher

Architect and planner Arif Hasan played a major role in documenting and analysing the Orangi Pilot Project. His research helped explain why the project worked and how community participation could be connected with formal urban planning.

Although not originally from Orangi, his decades of work on the neighbourhood make him an important personality in Karachi West's intellectual and development history.

Ali Khursheedi — Contemporary Political Figure

Ali Khursheedi is a Karachi politician who has represented a Karachi West constituency in the Sindh Assembly. He later became Leader of the Opposition in the Sindh Assembly. His political career reflects the continuing importance of Karachi West in Sindh's electoral politics.

Syed Hafeezuddin — Politician and Karachi West Representative

Syed Hafeezuddin is another political figure associated with Karachi West. He has represented Karachi West constituencies at both provincial and national levels and has remained active in Karachi politics across different political platforms.

Footballers of Manghopir and Western Karachi

Karachi West has an active grassroots football culture. Manghopir contains football clubs and academies, while Orangi and Mominabad have long traditions of neighbourhood football. The district's football story is less about one celebrity superstar and more about the large number of young players developed through local clubs and academies.

The Pakistan Football Federation's club listings include Manghopir National Football Club, Manghopir Shaheen, Manghopir Union, Orangi Baloch, Orangi Millat, Momin Abad Sports and numerous other Karachi West clubs.

Meher and Rajab Ali — Manghopir's Football Story

Manghopir has also produced young footballers who attracted national attention. Teenage footballers Meher and Rajab Ali were among the young Karachi players connected with the Pakistan side that won a bronze medal at the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing. Contemporary reporting highlighted Manghopir's community celebrations around Rajab Ali's return.

Why the District's Famous People Matter

The personalities associated with Karachi West reveal something important about the district. Its fame does not come only from entertainment celebrities. Instead, the district has produced and attracted people involved in community development, urban planning, politics and grassroots sport.

That is consistent with the character of the area itself: millions of residents creating institutions from the neighbourhood level upward.

Languages: Western Karachi's Great Diversity

The 2023 census gives Urdu as the largest first language in Karachi West, followed by Pashto. Punjabi, Sindhi, Saraiki, Balochi and Hindko also have substantial speaker populations.

This linguistic pattern is especially important because western Karachi has been a destination for migrants from many parts of Pakistan. Pashtun communities are particularly visible, while Urdu-speaking families form the largest language group overall.

The result is a district where different food traditions, clothing styles, languages, businesses and religious practices exist side by side.

Education: A Major Challenge and Opportunity

Education remains one of the district's most important development priorities. The Sindh Annual School Census 2023–24 records approximately 21,991 primary-level students, 1,862 elementary students, 1,013 middle students, 16,796 secondary students and 1,417 higher-secondary students across the district's reported school system.

The same school census records 40,060 students in Urdu-medium education, 1,634 in English-medium education and 1,385 in Sindhi-medium education.

These figures demonstrate both the size of the education system and the continuing importance of Urdu-medium schooling in western Karachi.

Work and the Local Economy

Karachi West's economy is strongly connected to the working population. Small shops, transport, workshops, construction, home-based production, retail, food businesses and informal enterprises provide income for hundreds of thousands of residents.

Historically, the wider western Karachi belt has also been connected with industrial activity and the SITE area. However, after the creation of Keamari District in 2020, the administrative boundaries of Karachi West changed and many areas formerly associated with West now belong to Keamari.

This distinction matters when discussing industry. MyBook.Pk does not assign the entire historic SITE industrial economy to today's Karachi West.

GDP and Tax Contribution

Karachi is Pakistan's largest metropolitan economy and contributes a major share of national production and tax revenue. However, there is no reliable current official statistic assigning a precise percentage of Pakistan's GDP to Karachi West alone.

The district's economy is also heavily based on small and medium businesses, retail, transport and household enterprises that are difficult to measure through a simple district GDP calculation.

For this reason, MyBook.Pk will not claim that Karachi West produces a specific percentage such as “5%” or “10%” of Pakistan's GDP without an official district-level national-accounts source.

The more defensible conclusion is that Karachi West is an important labour, consumer and enterprise base within Karachi's much larger metropolitan economy.

Manghopir's Sufi Heritage

Manghopir is associated with the Sufi saint Pir Mangho, whose shrine has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. The area is also famous for its crocodile pond, where crocodiles have traditionally been associated with the shrine.

The annual Sheedi Mela adds another cultural dimension. The festival is connected with the Sheedi community and combines religious devotion, music, dancing and local traditions.

Manghopir therefore provides an unusual cultural contrast to the dense urban neighbourhoods only a short distance away.

Orangi's Community Identity

Orangi's identity has been shaped by people building neighbourhood life under difficult conditions. Houses, streets, markets, mosques, schools, workshops and small enterprises expanded through successive waves of settlement.

The Orangi Pilot Project showed that this community capacity could become a development resource rather than being viewed only as a problem for government.

This is one reason Orangi is studied by urban planners and development researchers outside Pakistan.

Transport and Connectivity

Western Karachi depends heavily on road transport. Orangi Link Road, Manghopir Road, Shahrah-e-Qaddafi and other major routes connect residential settlements with the rest of Karachi.

Public transport remains essential because a large share of residents travel daily for employment and education outside their immediate neighbourhoods. The Sindh People's Bus Service has also included routes connecting Orangi with other parts of Karachi.

Religion and Community Life

Islam is the overwhelming majority religion in Karachi West, but the district also contains Christian, Hindu, Sikh, Parsi and other minority communities. Mosques, churches, schools, shrines and community organisations form part of the local social infrastructure.

The district's religious life ranges from the Sufi traditions of Manghopir to the neighbourhood mosques and community institutions of Orangi and Mominabad.

Urban Problems

The district's challenges are closely related to its size and population. Water supply, sewerage, solid waste, road maintenance, public transport, education, healthcare and housing remain important issues.

Rapid population growth can also place pressure on open land and infrastructure. Manghopir's more open landscapes face a different set of challenges from Orangi's dense urban environment.

What Makes Karachi West Different?

Karachi West is not primarily defined by expensive commercial towers or coastal tourism. Its identity comes from neighbourhood life, migration, community enterprise, spiritual heritage, grassroots sport and development experiments.

Orangi represents community organisation. Mominabad represents dense, multilingual urban life. Manghopir represents spirituality, history and a different physical landscape.

Together they make Karachi West one of the most socially significant parts of metropolitan Karachi.

Karachi West in Pakistan's Urban Story

Few places illustrate Pakistan's urban transformation as clearly as western Karachi. Millions of people have arrived here over generations looking for work, education, security and opportunity.

They built homes and businesses, created neighbourhood institutions and developed their own systems of support. The story of Karachi West is therefore not simply a story of urban problems. It is also a story of adaptation.

From Akhtar Hameed Khan's community-development experiment to Manghopir's centuries-old spiritual traditions and the football grounds of Orangi and Mominabad, Karachi West demonstrates how communities create identity within a rapidly changing metropolis.

That combination of population, diversity, entrepreneurship, culture and community organisation makes Karachi West an essential part of understanding modern Karachi and Pakistan.
