Province: Sindh
Division: Sukkur Division
2023 population: 2,597,535
Area: approximately 15,910 km²
Talukas: 8
District headquarters: Khairpur
Khairpur is one of the most historically distinctive districts of Sindh. Its modern identity combines several different layers of history: the ancient archaeological culture of Kot Diji, the Talpur princely state, the royal architecture of Khairpur city, the Sufi tradition of Sachal Sarmast, and the agricultural economy built around the date palm.
The district occupies a large area of upper Sindh between the Indus plain and the eastern desert landscape. Its villages and towns are connected by irrigation canals, agricultural land, date orchards, roads and historic settlements. Khairpur city itself developed as the capital of the Khairpur branch of the Talpur dynasty.
Few districts in Pakistan combine archaeological importance, princely-state history, Sufi literature and a nationally important agricultural product as closely as Khairpur.
The 2023 census recorded a population of 2,597,535 for Khairpur District. The district had approximately 452,250 households.
Khairpur is large in area as well as population. The district's settlements are spread across irrigated agricultural plains, river-adjacent communities and the more arid landscape toward the east.
The population is overwhelmingly connected to Sindhi language and culture. Census-based profiles report Sindhi as the first language of approximately 97.73 percent of the district's population.
Khairpur taluka contains the district headquarters and the historic city of Khairpur Mirs. The 2023 census recorded approximately 465,233 people in the taluka.
Khairpur city itself had a population of approximately 191,044 in 2023. It remains the administrative, educational and cultural centre of the district.
Kingri taluka recorded approximately 370,304 people in the 2023 census. The area contains a mixture of rural settlements, agricultural communities and smaller urban centres.
Kingri is also part of the wider landscape in which the spiritual and cultural traditions of Khairpur developed around shrines, village communities and agricultural life.
Kot Diji is perhaps the most internationally recognisable historical name in the district. It is associated with both an ancient archaeological culture and the later Talpur fort.
The 2023 census recorded approximately 319,000 people in the taluka. Its geographical position near the eastern edge of the Indus plain also places it close to the transition toward the Thar Desert.
Mirwah taluka is another important agricultural part of the district. Irrigation and village-based farming support a large rural population, while towns and markets connect producers with the wider Khairpur economy.
Sobho Dero is an important agricultural and cultural area of Khairpur. Its settlements form part of the dense network of villages and market towns that depend on irrigation and farming.
Gambat is one of the better-known towns of the district and an important service centre. It is connected to Khairpur's agricultural economy and to the wider road network of upper Sindh.
Faiz Ganj occupies a predominantly rural part of the district. Its communities depend heavily on agriculture, livestock and local markets.
Nara is the easternmost and one of the more geographically distinctive parts of Khairpur. Its landscape reflects the transition from irrigated Sindh toward the drier desert environment.
The political history of modern Khairpur is closely associated with the Talpur dynasty. In 1783, Mir Sohrab Khan Talpur, a member of the Talpur family, established the Khairpur branch of the dynasty.
The settlement that became Khairpur was selected as the centre of the new state. The city therefore developed not simply as an agricultural town but as the capital of a princely state with its own court, administration, military organisation and architectural traditions.
The Talpur period left a deep mark on the district. Palaces, forts, gardens and other structures survive as physical reminders of the period when Khairpur had a separate political identity.
The most famous royal building in Khairpur city is Faiz Mahal.
The palace was built in 1798 by Mir Sohrab Khan, founder of the Khairpur branch of the Talpurs. It served as the principal court building of the royal palace complex.
Faiz Mahal is a large three-storey structure whose architecture combines influences associated with Rajput and Mughal traditions. Its courtly spaces, gardens and historic surroundings provide a remarkable picture of Khairpur's princely past.
The palace is particularly important because it is not an isolated monument. It forms part of the broader architectural landscape of a former princely capital.
About 25 kilometres from Khairpur city stands the imposing Kot Diji Fort, built during the Talpur period under Mir Sohrab Khan.
The fort occupies a high hill overlooking the surrounding landscape. Its defensive position and gateways demonstrate the military requirements of the eighteenth-century Khairpur state.
The Sindh Directorate General of Antiquities describes the fort as having three strong eastern gateways, terraces, defensive walls, semi-circular bastions and a surviving brass cannon known as Mariam, bearing Portuguese and Persian inscriptions.
The fort is therefore both an architectural monument and a physical reminder of the political world created by the Talpur rulers.
The name Kot Diji has an even older meaning than the Talpur fort. Archaeologists use Kot Diji Culture to describe an Early Harappan phase associated with the site, generally dated to roughly 3300–2800 BCE.
Excavations at Kot Diji revealed evidence of an early urban and fortified settlement. Archaeological work in the 1950s helped demonstrate that complex societies existed in the Indus region before the mature phase of the Indus Valley Civilisation.
This makes Khairpur important not only for the history of Sindh but for the broader story of urban civilisation in South Asia.
The archaeological site should not be confused with the later eighteenth-century fort. The ancient settlement and the Talpur-era fortress belong to very different periods, even though they share the name Kot Diji.
One of Khairpur's greatest cultural figures is Sachal Sarmast, the eighteenth-century Sufi poet whose shrine stands at Daraza Sharif.
Born around 1739 in Daraza, Sachal Sarmast's given name was Abdul Wahab Farooqi. He became known as Sachal, the truth-speaker, and Sarmast, a reference to spiritual ecstasy.
He is famously remembered as Shair-e-Haft Zaban, the poet of seven languages. His poetry is associated with Sindhi, Siraiki, Persian, Urdu, Balochi, Punjabi and Arabic.
Sachal's poetry is central to Sindh's Sufi literary tradition because it emphasises spiritual love, inner freedom and the unity of humanity. His shrine at Daraza remains one of the district's most important pilgrimage and cultural sites.
The annual Urs at Daraza Sharif attracts devotees and visitors from across Sindh and other parts of Pakistan. The shrine therefore continues the district's tradition of connecting poetry, spirituality, music and community life.
Khairpur is perhaps best known economically for its date palms. The district is the centre of date cultivation in Sindh and produces the famous Aseel variety.
Available district profiles estimate that around 85 percent of Sindh's date production comes from Khairpur. Date orchards cover tens of thousands of hectares and form a major part of the agricultural landscape.
Dates are not simply an agricultural product here. They support harvesting labour, packaging, transport, wholesale markets, processing and export-oriented trade.
The Aseel date is particularly important. It is valued for its flavour, texture and keeping qualities and has become closely associated with the commercial identity of Khairpur.
The date industry provides income to farmers and workers across the district. However, farmers face challenges involving water management, weather, pests, post-harvest handling, market access and international branding.
One of the biggest opportunities for Khairpur is to capture more value after the date leaves the farm. Better grading, drying, packaging, processing and branding can help transform a raw agricultural product into higher-value food products.
The district's agricultural economy also includes wheat, rice, sugarcane and other crops. Livestock contributes additional income to rural households.
The Mehrano area provides another unusual dimension to Khairpur. Historically associated with the Talpur rulers, the Mehrano landscape includes forest, agricultural land, water bodies and wildlife habitat.
Its environment demonstrates that Khairpur's geography is more varied than its reputation as a date-producing district might suggest. Irrigated agricultural land exists alongside drier terrain and areas of natural or semi-natural habitat.
Khairpur has one of the largest school systems among Sindh's districts. The Sindh Annual School Census 2023–24 records 3,104 schools, of which 2,925 were functional.
The same census records approximately 411,311 students and 11,877 teachers. The functional school network includes primary, elementary, middle, secondary and higher-secondary institutions.
The education system is overwhelmingly Sindhi-medium at the school level. The 2023–24 census records more than 398,000 enrolments in Sindhi-medium schools, compared with much smaller numbers in Urdu and English-medium institutions.
Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur is one of the district's most important educational institutions. The university gives Khairpur a wider intellectual role in Sindh and attracts students from different districts.
The presence of a university in the district capital also strengthens Khairpur's position as an educational centre rather than simply an agricultural market town.
Khairpur has produced an unusually broad collection of prominent personalities. The list includes Sufi poets, political leaders, members of former ruling families and influential public figures.
Sachal Sarmast is the district's most internationally recognised literary and spiritual personality. Born at Daraza around 1739, he became one of Sindh's most important Sufi poets.
His poetry in multiple languages and his emphasis on spiritual freedom and human unity made him one of the defining voices of Sindhi Sufi literature.
Pir Sibghatullah Shah Rashdi II, widely known as Pir Pagaro, was a major spiritual and anti-colonial figure associated with the Hur movement of Sindh.
The Pagaro spiritual tradition is deeply connected with Khairpur and upper Sindh. Pir Pagaro's legacy is particularly important in the history of the Hurs, who resisted British colonial rule.
Syed Qaim Ali Shah is one of the most prominent modern political figures from Khairpur. He served as Chief Minister of Sindh for two periods and was a longstanding senior figure in the Pakistan Peoples Party.
His political career has been closely connected with Khairpur and the wider development of the district. Academic studies have specifically examined his political and socio-economic role in Khairpur.
Syed Ghous Ali Shah is another nationally prominent politician from Khairpur. He served as Chief Minister of Sindh and later held federal responsibilities, including the Defence portfolio.
His career makes him one of the most significant political figures associated with the district in the post-independence period.
Mir Ali Murad Talpur was one of the rulers of the former Khairpur princely state. The Talpur rulers shaped the political, architectural and cultural identity of the district.
The surviving royal buildings and heritage sites of Khairpur are directly connected to this historical ruling family.
Manzoor Wassan is a well-known Sindhi politician associated with Khairpur. He has served in the Sindh Assembly and held provincial ministerial responsibilities.
Pir Ilahi Bakhsh was an important political figure from Sindh and is associated with Khairpur's political history. He held senior public office during the early decades of Pakistan.
Abdul Hameed Dogar is another notable personality associated with Khairpur's political and public life.
Khairpur's list of famous people is therefore unusual: its national profile is shaped as much by Sufi literature, spiritual leadership and princely history as by electoral politics.
The history of Khairpur and surrounding Sindh cannot be separated from the Hur movement. The Hurs were a religious and social community associated with the spiritual leadership of the Pirs of Pagaro.
During British rule, the Hurs became associated with resistance to colonial authority. The movement developed into one of the most significant anti-colonial struggles in Sindh.
Pir Sibghatullah Shah Rashdi II became a central figure in this resistance. His execution by the British in 1943 remains an important event in the political memory of Sindh.
The Indus is fundamental to the district's agricultural geography. Irrigation canals distribute river water across large areas, allowing crops and date orchards to flourish in an otherwise hot and dry climate.
The district's agricultural prosperity therefore depends on the relationship between river water, canals, groundwater, soil and farming practices.
Water management remains one of the most important long-term issues for Khairpur. Agricultural expansion, urban growth and climate variability all increase pressure on available water resources.
Khairpur experiences extremely hot summers and relatively mild winters. The district lies in a dry region where annual rainfall is low and irregular.
The intense heat has shaped agriculture, architecture and daily life. Date palms are particularly well suited to the climate, helping explain why the crop became such a dominant part of the local economy.
Khairpur is deeply rooted in Sindhi culture. Sindhi language, Sufi poetry, shrine traditions, agricultural festivals and village customs remain important parts of local identity.
The district's cultural landscape is especially rich because it brings together royal heritage and popular traditions. Faiz Mahal represents courtly culture, Kot Diji represents archaeological memory, while Daraza Sharif represents the spiritual and poetic tradition of Sindh.
Khairpur city serves as the district's principal health-service centre, with hospitals and specialist facilities serving residents from across the district.
The district's large geographic size means that access to specialised healthcare can still depend on distance. Residents of rural talukas may need to travel to Khairpur city or larger regional centres for advanced treatment.
Agriculture remains the largest foundation of the district economy, but Khairpur has opportunities to expand agro-processing and value-added industries.
Date processing, packaging, cold storage, food manufacturing, agricultural machinery and transport services can all build upon the district's existing agricultural base.
The presence of Shah Abdul Latif University also creates opportunities for research, entrepreneurship, agricultural innovation and skilled employment.
Khairpur's development challenges are closely connected to its geography and economy. Water management, extreme heat, agricultural market access, rural education, healthcare access and infrastructure remain important concerns.
Date farmers also need better post-harvest systems. A stronger cold chain, improved packaging, international branding and processing could allow a larger share of the final value of Khairpur's famous dates to remain within the district.
Heritage conservation is another important priority. Faiz Mahal, Kot Diji Fort, the archaeological site and other historic structures provide cultural value as well as potential for responsible tourism.
Khairpur is difficult to describe with a single label. It is an agricultural district, but it is also a former princely state. It is known for dates, but it is equally important for archaeology. It has royal palaces and forts, yet its cultural identity is also deeply rooted in village life and Sufi poetry.
Kot Diji connects Khairpur to the earliest chapters of urban civilisation in the Indus region. The Talpur monuments connect it to the political history of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Sindh. Daraza connects the district to Sachal Sarmast and the spiritual tradition of Sindh.
Modern Khairpur adds another layer through universities, agriculture, date processing, roads and expanding towns. Its future therefore depends on preserving the historic and environmental resources that make the district distinctive while creating better economic opportunities for its large population.
