Mirpurkhas District

The City of Mangoes — home of Sindhri mangoes, historic Kahu-jo-Daro, fertile orchards and the eastern cultural landscape of Sindh.

Mirpurkhas at a Glance

Mirpurkhas District is one of the important agricultural and cultural districts of southeastern Sindh. It is particularly famous throughout Pakistan for its mangoes, especially the celebrated Sindhri mango. At the same time, the district has a much older history, including the Buddhist-era archaeological site of Kahu-jo-Daro and the legacy of the Talpur rulers.

According to the 2023 Population and Housing Census, Mirpurkhas District has a population of 1,681,386. The district covers approximately 2,925 square kilometres. About 29.27 percent of its population was classified as urban in the 2023 census, while the average household size was about 5.3 persons. The population grew from 1,504,440 in 2017 to the 2023 total, representing an average annual growth rate of about 1.88 percent.

History of Mirpurkhas

The history of the Mirpurkhas region reaches far beyond the modern city. Archaeological discoveries show that communities connected with Buddhism and other traditions lived in this part of Sindh many centuries ago. Kahu-jo-Daro, near the modern city, is one of the most important reminders of that earlier history.

The modern city of Mirpurkhas is associated with the Talpur period. Historical accounts place the foundation of the city in the early nineteenth century, when Mir Ali Murad Talpur of the Mankani branch of the Talpur dynasty established it as a new capital. The city subsequently became an important centre in the eastern part of Sindh.

British rule changed the administrative role of the area after the annexation of Sindh in 1843. Mirpurkhas eventually developed into an important railway and administrative centre. In the twentieth century, its location between Hyderabad, Umerkot and the routes toward the eastern desert helped strengthen its importance as a market town.

The administrative history of the district also changed over time. Mirpurkhas District in its present form emerged from the reorganisation of the region in 1990, when the former Tharparkar area was divided and Mirpurkhas became a separate district.

The Seven Talukas

Mirpurkhas District is divided into seven talukas: Mirpur Khas, Digri, Jhuddo, Kot Ghulam Muhammad, Sindhri, Hussain Bux Mari and Shujaabad.

Mirpurkhas: The City of Mangoes

The strongest modern symbol of Mirpurkhas is the mango. The city and surrounding district are widely known as an important mango growing region, and the name Mirpurkhas is especially associated with Sindhri, one of Pakistan's best-known mango varieties.

The mango is not simply a seasonal fruit in Mirpurkhas. Orchards are part of the district's landscape and rural economy. Farmers, orchard workers, nursery operators, transporters, commission agents, fruit traders, packers and retailers all participate in the mango value chain.

Research on mango production in Sindh has identified Mirpurkhas as the province's largest mango-growing district in the cited dataset, with approximately 12,196 hectares under mango cultivation. The exact cultivated area can vary over time because orchards are affected by water availability, weather, land use and changing agricultural decisions.

The Sindhri Mango

Sindhri is the mango most closely associated with Mirpurkhas. The variety is known for its large oval shape, attractive yellow colour when ripe, distinctive aroma and sweet flesh. Its popularity has made it one of the defining fruits of Sindh and an important part of Pakistan's reputation as a mango-producing country.

The official Sindhri Mango geographical-indication specification prepared for TDAP records a long history of mango research and breeding in Mirpurkhas. It states that mango varieties from across the subcontinent were collected in the early twentieth century and that Sindhri was developed and cultivated in the Mirpurkhas area.

Sindhri generally appears early in Pakistan's mango season. Its arrival in markets signals the beginning of one of the most anticipated fruit seasons in Sindh. The fruit is enjoyed fresh, sliced into desserts, blended into drinks and used in a variety of household preparations.

Sindhri has also become part of Mirpurkhas's cultural branding. The district's mango identity appears in agricultural exhibitions, local businesses, fruit markets and tourism promotion. For many visitors, travelling to Mirpurkhas during mango season means experiencing the district through its orchards and fruit markets as much as through its historical sites.

Mango Festivals and Horticulture

Mirpurkhas has a long association with mango exhibitions and horticultural research. The Sindh Horticulture Research Institute in the district has provided an institutional setting for work on fruit varieties and agricultural improvement.

The district has also hosted national-level mango and summer-fruit festivals. At the 53rd National Mango & Summer Fruits Festival in 2018, Radio Pakistan reported that 162 mango varieties were being displayed, including Sindhri, Dusehri, Chaunsa, Langra, Anwar Ratol, Neelum, Tota Pari, Gulab Khasa, Collector, Dilpasand, Began Phali and other varieties.

Such events are significant because they show that Mirpurkhas's mango culture is much broader than a single variety. The district is part of a wider horticultural tradition involving experimentation, orchard management, fruit marketing and the preservation of local varieties.

Agriculture Beyond Mangoes

Although mangoes dominate the district's public image, Mirpurkhas is not a one-crop economy. Agriculture includes a range of field crops, vegetables, fruits and other horticultural products. Irrigation and access to agricultural markets remain fundamental to rural livelihoods.

Farming supports much more than the farmer alone. Agricultural labour, transport, storage, wholesale markets, packaging and retail all depend on seasonal production. When a strong mango crop reaches the market, the economic activity spreads through many parts of the local supply chain.

At the same time, agriculture remains vulnerable to heat, water shortages, floods, pests, disease, rising input costs and fluctuations in crop prices. Improving orchard management, post-harvest handling, cold storage and market access can help farmers capture more value from their produce.

Sindhri Taluka and Muhammad Khan Junejo

Sindhri Taluka has an unusual distinction: it is associated both with the famous mango variety and with Muhammad Khan Junejo, who was born there in 1932 and later served as Pakistan's tenth prime minister from 1985 to 1988.

Junejo came from an agricultural family and had a personal connection with farming and Sindhri mangoes. Historical accounts also connect his father, Deen Mohammad Junejo, with the introduction of a South Indian mango variety to local plantations. The story is frequently included in accounts of how Sindhri developed in the Mirpurkhas area.

Junejo therefore represents an interesting part of the district's modern identity: agriculture and national politics meet in the same local landscape.

Kahu-jo-Daro: Buddhist Heritage

Mirpurkhas is also home to one of Sindh's important archaeological landmarks, Kahu-jo-Daro, also called the Mirpurkhas Buddhist stupa.

The archaeological complex covers roughly 30 acres and contains the remains of a large Buddhist establishment. Excavations in the early twentieth century uncovered a brick-built stupa and numerous terracotta sculptures. The surviving artistic material has been associated with traditions showing connections between Gandharan and Gupta-era art.

The site is important because it demonstrates that the cultural history of Sindh cannot be understood only through later Islamic and colonial periods. Buddhism, Hindu traditions and other ancient cultural currents also formed part of the region's past.

Archaeological research has identified Kahu-jo-Daro as a significant Buddhist centre, with terracotta representations of Buddha among its notable discoveries. Some of the excavated objects are now held in museums outside Pakistan, making the site part of a much wider story of South Asian art and archaeology.

Education and Healthcare

Education is important to the district's future because Mirpurkhas serves both a large urban population and extensive rural communities. Schools are distributed through the seven talukas, while colleges and other higher-education institutions provide opportunities for students after secondary school.

Agricultural education is particularly relevant to the district. Training in horticulture, irrigation, soil management, pest control, food processing, packaging and agricultural entrepreneurship could directly benefit farming households and young people.

Healthcare services are provided through public hospitals, basic health facilities and private institutions. The district headquarters and major towns provide greater access to medical services, while rural communities can face challenges involving transport, specialist care and continuity of treatment.

People and Culture

Sindhi is central to Mirpurkhas's cultural identity. The district also has Urdu-speaking communities and other linguistic and ethnic groups. The 2023 census reported Sindhi as the first language of about 73.7 percent of the district's population and Urdu as the first language of about 11.93 percent.

The district's culture reflects the wider diversity of southeastern Sindh. Agriculture, Sufi traditions, local festivals, Hindu heritage, Sindhi literature, traditional food and rural community life all contribute to its character.

Climate and Environment

Mirpurkhas experiences very hot summers and relatively mild winters. The hot climate is challenging for people and agriculture, but it also plays a role in the region's suitability for mango cultivation when combined with irrigation and appropriate orchard management.

Climate change presents new challenges. Extreme heat, irregular rainfall, flooding and water stress can affect crops and rural livelihoods. Efficient irrigation, drainage, resilient orchard practices and better agricultural forecasting are increasingly important for the district.

Famous People and Local Associations

Muhammad Khan Junejo is the most prominent nationally known political figure directly associated with the district. Born in Sindhri, he served as Pakistan's prime minister from 1985 to 1988.

Deen Mohammad Junejo is remembered locally for his connection with agriculture and the history of the Sindhri mango.

Beyond individual personalities, Mirpurkhas is strongly associated with generations of farmers, horticultural researchers and orchard families who helped establish the district's reputation as a mango centre.

Transport and Markets

Mirpurkhas's location makes it an important market and transport centre for surrounding agricultural areas. Roads connect the district with Hyderabad, Umerkot and other parts of southeastern Sindh, while the historic railway network contributed greatly to the city's development.

During mango season, transportation becomes particularly important. Fruit must move quickly from orchards to markets and processing or packing facilities. Better roads, cold-chain infrastructure and modern packaging can reduce post-harvest losses and help growers reach distant consumers.

Public Issues and Future Development

Mirpurkhas has significant agricultural potential, but development depends on more than increasing production. Farmers need reliable water, good roads, affordable agricultural inputs, storage facilities, market information and access to modern farming techniques.

The district can also benefit from greater investment in education, healthcare, sanitation, drainage and urban infrastructure. Rural roads are particularly important because they connect villages and orchards with schools, hospitals and markets.

Tourism is another opportunity. A visitor route combining Mirpurkhas city, Kahu-jo-Daro, mango orchards and Sindhri could connect archaeological heritage with agricultural tourism. Mango festivals, orchard visits, horticultural exhibitions and local food could give visitors a more complete understanding of the district.

Why Mirpurkhas Matters

Mirpurkhas is sometimes reduced to a simple nickname: the City of Mangoes. The nickname is deserved, but it tells only part of the story. The district combines ancient Buddhist archaeology, Talpur history, agricultural innovation, Sindhri mango orchards, modern political history and the everyday life of a large rural population.

Its mangoes provide Mirpurkhas with an identity recognized across Pakistan. Its archaeological heritage connects the district with the much older history of Sindh. Its agricultural communities provide the economic foundation of the region, while its towns serve as centres for education, trade and public services.

Mirpurkhas is therefore both an agricultural powerhouse and a historical landscape — a district where the story of a famous mango grows alongside the much older story of Sindh itself.
