A Mountain District Without an Urban Core
Sherani is one of northern Balochistan's most distinctive districts. Its identity is shaped less by a large town and more by mountains, forests, valleys, scattered settlements, livestock, seasonal movement and strong community traditions.
Where the Sulaiman Mountains Begin to Tell Their Story
Sherani occupies a rugged section of the Sulaiman mountain system in northern Balochistan. The district is a landscape of high ridges, valleys, streams, forests and grazing grounds rather than a conventional urban centre.
Government and disaster-management profiles describe elevations ranging from roughly 678 metres to more than 3,300 metres above sea level. This dramatic variation creates different ecological zones within the district.
Why Is It Called Sherani?
The district takes its name from the Sherani people, a Pashtun community historically associated with this part of the Sulaiman range.
The name therefore describes both a place and a people. Sherani's modern administrative identity is relatively recent, but the communities and tribal relationships connected with the area have much deeper roots.
The district's identity should consequently be understood through its social geography as much as through its administrative boundaries.
From Zhob to a Separate District
Sherani was historically part of the wider Zhob administrative region. It became a separate district on 3 January 2006 after being separated from Zhob.
The creation of the district gave its mountain communities their own administrative structure while preserving their historic connection with the wider Zhob and Sulaiman region.
The area was administered within Zhob District and shared the historical and political development of the wider Zhob region.
Sherani was formally separated from Zhob and notified as a district.
The national census recorded a population of 191,687 in the district.
The Sherani and Harifal Communities
Sherani's social identity is closely associated with Pashtun communities, particularly the Sherani and Harifal groups.
Historical and administrative descriptions also identify other families and tribal groups living in the wider area. Social organization has traditionally been influenced by kinship, tribal relationships, elders and shared grazing and land interests.
Pashto in the Mountains
Pashto is the dominant language of Sherani and forms an important part of the district's cultural identity.
The 2023 census records the district as overwhelmingly rural, and community life remains closely connected to local Pashtun traditions. Other languages may be encountered through migration, trade and contact with neighbouring districts.
Language in Sherani is therefore not simply a communication system. It carries oral history, poetry, family memory, tribal identity and knowledge of the mountains.
Chilgoza — Sherani's Golden Pine
Few natural resources are more closely associated with Sherani than chilgoza pine. The dry temperate forests of the district contain chilgoza pine along with blue pine, wild olive, pistachio, wild almond and other highland species.
Chilgoza nuts are collected by local communities and sold into regional markets. For many households, the forest is not simply an environmental asset but an important seasonal source of income.
Wildfire and the Chilgoza Forests
Sherani's chilgoza forests have faced serious wildfire threats. Large forest fires in the Sulaiman region have demonstrated how difficult it can be to protect mountain forests when steep terrain, strong winds and limited water make firefighting difficult.
The Balochistan Forest and Wildlife Department has an ongoing scheme specifically focused on restoration and recovery of wildfire-affected chilgoza forests in Sherani.
Forest restoration matters because the loss of mature chilgoza trees can affect biodiversity, soil stability, water systems and the income of communities that depend on forest products.
A Forest of Many Useful Plants
Chilgoza Pine
One of Sherani's most valuable natural resources and an important component of the district's high-altitude forests.
Wild Olive
Olive woodland occurs in the foothills and contributes to the district's ecological diversity.
Pistachio
Wild pistachio species are among the plants associated with the higher mountain zones.
Wild Almond
Wild almond is another component of Sherani's highland vegetation.
Medicinal and Non-Timber Forest Products
Sherani's forests provide more than timber and chilgoza. Local communities have historically used a variety of plants for household purposes, livestock needs, fuel and traditional medicine.
Government and disaster-management documentation identifies plants such as oman, wild almond, zralg, malaghunae and aspighol among the district's non-timber forest resources.
These resources show how mountain communities can derive value from ecosystems without depending entirely on conventional agriculture.
Where the Streams Begin
Water is one of Sherani's most important and difficult subjects. Rainfall is limited and varies strongly with elevation, while much of the terrain is steep and difficult to irrigate.
Zhob River
Western slopes of the Sherani range contribute drainage toward the Zhob River system.
Khaisara Stream
Water from eastern slopes drains toward the Khaisara stream.
Lahar Stream
The Lahar stream begins in Sherani and eventually drains toward the Gomal River near Dera Ismail Khan.
Lasmandai
Lasmandai is another local stream identified in government district information.
Farming in a Difficult Landscape
Agriculture remains an important source of subsistence, but Sherani's mountain terrain and limited irrigation make farming difficult.
Cultivated land is concentrated in locations where soil, seasonal water and topography permit. Farming is often combined with livestock keeping, forest collection and seasonal work.
Improving small dams, water harvesting and efficient irrigation can make a significant difference in a district where even modest increases in reliable water can expand agricultural opportunity.
Livestock and Seasonal Movement
Livestock has traditionally been central to life in Sherani. Sheep, goats and cattle provide food, income and household wealth in a landscape where crop farming cannot support every family.
Seasonal movement between higher and lower grazing areas is part of the traditional pastoral system. Families may adapt their movements to temperature, pasture availability and water.
This mobile way of life is one reason Sherani can feel very different from densely settled agricultural districts elsewhere in Pakistan.
Life Between the Highlands and Plains
Historical government descriptions of Sherani describe a lifestyle in which seasonal movement remains important, with communities using higher areas during warmer periods and lower grazing grounds during colder months.
Such movement is an adaptation to the mountain environment. It allows livestock to follow available pasture while reducing pressure on a single grazing area.
Modern roads, schools, healthcare and markets are gradually changing these patterns, but pastoral traditions remain an important part of Sherani's identity.
The Sulaiman Range
Sherani lies along the western side of the Sulaiman mountain system. The landscape rises and falls dramatically, with narrow valleys, mountain slopes and high ridges creating a complex geography.
The Sulaiman Mountains form a major natural divide between Balochistan and the areas to the east. Their passes have historically connected communities across the region.
Sherani's location gives it a strong geographic relationship with Zhob, Musakhel, South Waziristan and the wider Gomal region.
Takht-e-Sulaiman and the Sacred Mountain Landscape
The broader Sulaiman mountain system is associated with Takht-e-Sulaiman, or Solomon's Throne, one of the region's most famous peaks and sacred landscapes.
Local traditions connect the mountain with the prophet-king Solomon, while the wider region also contains long-standing traditions associated with Islamic pilgrimage and local sacred geography.
Sherani's proximity to this landscape adds another dimension to its identity: the mountains are not only physical terrain but also part of the cultural imagination of the region.
The Wider Zhob-Sulaiman History
Sherani's history is closely linked with the wider Zhob region. Historical accounts describe the area as home to Pashtun communities for centuries and as part of a rugged frontier environment that resisted easy outside control.
The wider Zhob valley was described by early travellers and later became important in the political history of the Afghan and Durrani worlds.
Sherani inherited this historical landscape rather than developing in isolation from it.
The Age of Zhob and Yaghistan
Before modern district boundaries, the mountain country around Zhob was known to British officials as a difficult frontier. The term “Yaghistan” was used in colonial sources for areas where outside authorities faced strong resistance.
British forces gradually expanded control over the Zhob Valley and surrounding routes during the late nineteenth century. The resulting political changes affected communities throughout the region, including areas that would later become Sherani.
From Zhob Valley to Modern Balochistan
The British took control of the Zhob Valley in the late nineteenth century and established a political administration that eventually included the wider area.
Roads, political posts and later administrative institutions changed patterns of movement and government.
Sherani remained fundamentally rural and mountainous, however, and its local social structure retained much of its traditional character.
Jirga, Elders and Community Life
Traditional community institutions have historically played an important role in Sherani. Tribal elders and jirga traditions were used to mediate disputes and maintain relationships between families and groups.
Formal government institutions now provide the legal framework of the district, but customary practices and community mediation continue to influence local social life.
The coexistence of traditional authority and modern administration is characteristic of many mountain communities across northern Balochistan.
Faith in Everyday Life
Sherani is overwhelmingly Muslim, and Islamic traditions are deeply integrated into family and community life.
Religious occasions such as Eid are important social events, while mosques and religious teachers remain important community institutions.
Religious life also interacts with older local traditions, hospitality, kinship networks and community gatherings.
The District's Biggest Human Development Challenge
According to the 2023 census, Sherani's literacy rate was only 23.86%. PBS places Sherani among the districts with the lowest literacy rates in Pakistan.
The reasons are interconnected: rugged terrain, dispersed settlements, limited infrastructure, poverty, long distances and social barriers can all make regular schooling difficult.
Improving education in Sherani requires more than simply building schools. Teachers, transport, girls' education, attendance, secondary schooling and reliable facilities are all part of the challenge.
Closing the Distance to School
Girls' education is especially important in a district where settlements are scattered across difficult terrain.
Safe access to schools, female teachers, functioning sanitation, secondary-level facilities and community support can make a major difference to girls' continued education.
The education of girls also produces benefits that extend beyond the classroom, including improved household health, children's education and future economic participation.
A Network Across the Mountains
Government district information lists primary, middle and high schools across Sherani, as well as degree-level institutions.
The distribution of schools matters particularly in Sherani because population is dispersed. A school that is geographically close to one village may still be difficult to reach from another settlement across a mountain or seasonal stream.
Mobile education initiatives, improved roads and carefully located schools can complement conventional infrastructure.
Health Services Across Difficult Terrain
Sherani's geography also affects healthcare access. The district's scattered communities can be far from major medical facilities.
Government district information lists a District Headquarters hospital, rural health centres, basic health units, civil dispensaries and a maternal and child health facility.
Emergency transport and reliable referral systems are especially important in mountain districts where travel time can become a medical factor.
Dams and Water Infrastructure
Because water is fundamental to Sherani's agricultural future, small dams and water-storage projects have become important development priorities.
Government district information identifies projects including Killi Khaisara Narri Zarra Dam, Inzerkhaizi Dam Hassu Band and Killi Pervezan Dam Kapip.
Such projects can support irrigation, groundwater recharge and local water security if they are maintained and managed sustainably.
The Green Wealth of a Dry District
Sherani's forests are remarkable because they exist within an otherwise dry mountain environment. The district contains dry temperate chilgoza forests as well as subtropical broad-leaved scrub and olive woodland.
Forests help protect soil, regulate water, provide wildlife habitat and support local livelihoods.
Their value should therefore be measured in more than timber or nuts. They are part of the district's environmental infrastructure.
A Fragile Mountain Ecosystem
The combination of altitude, forests, grasslands, valleys and seasonal streams creates varied habitats across Sherani.
Wild olive, pistachio, chilgoza pine, blue pine and wild almond are among the characteristic plants of the district's higher zones.
Protecting these ecosystems is important not only for wildlife but also for people. Healthy forests reduce erosion, support grazing systems and help retain water in mountain landscapes.
Cold Mountains, Dry Summers
Sherani experiences strong seasonal variation. Summers can be hot in lower areas, while winter temperatures can fall well below freezing in the higher mountains.
Rainfall is relatively limited and varies with altitude. Much of the important precipitation occurs during the cooler part of the year.
Drought and irregular rainfall can affect both crops and livestock, making water conservation essential.
How People Make a Living
Livestock
Sheep, goats and cattle provide food, income and household wealth.
Agriculture
Farming continues where soils and seasonal water allow cultivation.
Chilgoza
Pine-nut collection provides an important seasonal forest income.
Migration
Labour migration provides another source of household income for families with members working outside the district.
When the Mountains Send People Out
Limited local employment has encouraged many residents to seek work outside Sherani. Government disaster-management material has noted migration to the Gulf, including the United Arab Emirates, as a source of household earnings.
Remittances can improve household living standards, education and housing, but migration can also separate families and remove working-age people from local communities.
Creating more productive opportunities inside the district would allow more families to benefit from Sherani's own agricultural, forest and livestock resources.
From Mountain Products to Regional Markets
Sherani's economy depends heavily on connections with markets outside the district. Chilgoza, livestock, agricultural products and forest products are moved toward larger regional markets.
Better roads and storage facilities can help local producers retain more value instead of selling immediately at the farm or forest gate.
Branding and improved processing of chilgoza and other non-timber forest products could create additional local employment.
Mughal Kot and the Mountain Corridors
Places such as Mughal Kot and Dhanasar illustrate the importance of mountain corridors in Sherani.
Mountain passes have historically connected communities across the Sulaiman range and linked Balochistan with the regions to the east.
In the modern era, the same geographic corridors remain important for transport, administration, trade and access to public services.
A District Without a Conventional City
Sherani is unusual in Pakistan because its identity is overwhelmingly rural. The 2023 PBS district table records no urban population for the district.
That does not mean Sherani lacks settlements, markets or administrative centres. Rather, it means that its population remains distributed across villages, valleys and rural communities rather than concentrated in a large officially classified urban centre.
This distinction is essential for understanding why roads, schools, health facilities and communications are so important here.
People Associated With Sherani
Sherani's public identity is more strongly associated with tribal, religious and political figures than with entertainment celebrities. Two names carrying the Sherani identity into national public life are Sain Kamal Khan Sherani and Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani.
Sain Kamal Khan Sherani
Sain Kamal Khan Sherani (1924–2010) was a Pakistani political leader associated with the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party and the political life of Balochistan.
Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani
Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani, born in 1938, is a Pakistani religious and political figure associated with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam and Balochistan's public life.
Literary and Intellectual Associations
The name Sherani also appears prominently in South Asian literary and intellectual history. Hafiz Mehmood Khan Shirani was a renowned scholar of Urdu and Persian, while Akhtar Sheerani became known as an important Urdu poet.
These figures should not automatically be described as people born in Sherani District. Their importance here is that the Sherani name also carries a wider intellectual and literary history beyond the modern district's boundaries.
Protecting Chilgoza Means Protecting Livelihoods
A mature chilgoza forest takes many years to develop. Damage caused by wildfire, uncontrolled cutting or poor harvesting practices can therefore have consequences that last for generations.
Community-based forest management, wildfire prevention, controlled harvesting and restoration can protect both biodiversity and household incomes.
Sherani's future could be built around the idea that conservation and economic development do not have to be opposing goals.
The Most Important Investment Is Human
Sherani's natural resources are valuable, but human capital is even more important. The district's low literacy rate means that education offers one of the clearest routes toward long-term change.
Better schooling can create opportunities in agriculture, forestry, healthcare, teaching, administration, technology and business while also improving the ability of communities to manage their natural resources.
Six Practical Priorities
1. Water
Expand small dams, rainwater harvesting and efficient irrigation.
2. Education
Increase access to schools, especially for girls and remote communities.
3. Forests
Protect and restore chilgoza forests and strengthen wildfire prevention.
4. Livestock
Improve veterinary services, grazing management and livestock markets.
5. Roads
Improve all-weather connectivity between mountain communities and markets.
6. Local Value
Process and market chilgoza, livestock and agricultural products closer to their source.

Sherani in One Image
Imagine a high mountain ridge at the edge of the Sulaiman range, a chilgoza forest covering the slopes, goats moving toward seasonal pasture, a narrow stream running through a valley, and a village scattered across the mountains rather than concentrated into a city.
That landscape captures something essential about Sherani.
It is a district where geography still has an unusually powerful influence over everyday life. Mountains determine roads. Water determines farming. Forests provide income. Livestock follows pasture. And community relationships remain central to how people organize life.
