Abbottabad District

Headquarters Abbottabad · Four tehsils · 2023 census 1,419,072 · Hazara Division

Abbottabad sits in a bowl of the Galiyat, on the old road that used to be the only way from Rawalpindi toward Mansehra and the Karakoram Highway. James Abbott gave the town its English name in the 1850s. People here still say they live in Hazara first and in KP second. Hindko is what you hear in the bazaar. Pashto and Urdu come in with students, soldiers and shopkeepers from outside.

The 2023 census put the district at 1,419,072 people and about 236,800 households. Area is 1,967 square kilometres. Literacy is high by KP standards: 77.34 percent overall, 86.20 percent for men, 68.42 percent for women. About 332,000 people are counted as urban. That urban number is not one city. It is Abbottabad municipal council, the big cantonment, Nawanshehr town, Havelian municipal council and Havelian cantonment added together.

Three places people name first

  1. Abbottabad cantonment plus the municipal town — the cantonment alone was listed near 160,000 in 2023 compilations; the municipal council near 75,000. Kakul (Pakistan Military Academy) sits above the bowl. Ayub Medical College and the teaching hospital sit in the same cluster.
  2. Havelian — tehsil of 256,754 people. Town and cantonment together. The railway and the new motorway traffic meet here more than they meet in the hill station above.
  3. Nawanshehr — town council listed near 41,000. It is the old neighbour of Abbottabad town, not a separate tehsil.

Four tehsils (PBS 2023)

Union councils on the Abbottabad side that keep turning up in public lists: Salhad, Sheikh-ul-Bandi, Namli Maira, Bakot, Dhamtour, Kuthiala, Nagri Totial, Kukmang, Pawa, Chamhad, Jarral Sharif. Those are council names, not a promise that every mohalla is printed here.

Hills and the Galiyat edge

Nathia Gali and Thandiani are the two hill names outsiders already know. Murree Gallies cantonment is a small counted place on the district books. In winter the same roads that bring weekend traffic also close schools in the higher union councils. That is ordinary weather, not a travel brochure.

Campuses and the hospital

Ayub Medical College and Ayub Teaching Hospital are why families from Mansehra, Battagram and even Kohistan sit in Abbottabad waiting rooms. COMSATS Abbottabad is the engineering name students use. PMA Kakul is a federal campus; it is in the district but it is not a district college. Government postgraduate colleges and a thick layer of high schools explain the literacy table better than any slogan.

Female literacy at 68 percent is strong next to Bajaur or upper Swat. The gap that remains is in Lower Tanawal and the farther Galiyat union councils, not in the cantt bazaar.

Work

The town lives on education, the army, passing trade and construction. Havelian takes more of the freight. Orchards and small wheat fields still hold the villages. Summer houses on the Galiyat road pay wages for half the year and sit empty for the other half.
