Chiniot is a young district on an old river town. Until 1 July 2009 it was a tehsil of Jhang. The headquarters sits on the left bank of the Chenab, between Faisalabad and Sargodha, with Jhang still to the west. What people outside Punjab already know is the furniture: carved wood, inlay and the workshop streets. What the census records is a small, dense irrigated district of three tehsils. PBS 2023: 1,563,024 people in 256,438 households on 2,643 km². Density about 591 per km² — much tighter than Bhakkar or residual Chakwal. Urban 491,672 (about 31 percent). Rural 1,071,352. Men 790,731, women 772,126. Under-tens: 417,070. Earlier marks: 965,124 in 1998, 1,368,659 in 2017.
Literacy at age ten and above is 55.05 percent — 64.64 percent for men and 45.19 percent for women. That female row is closer to southern canal districts than to Chakwal. Bhowana tehsil (about 49 percent) sits below Chiniot and Lalian (both about 57 percent).

Chiniot tehsil — 709 km², 633,621 people, literacy about 57.3 percent. Densest tehsil. Headquarters, the carved-wood bazaars, Omar Hayat Mahal (now a public library in the old haveli), Badshahi Masjid and the river crossing toward Faisalabad.
Lalian — 1,055 km², 500,786 people, literacy about 57.3 percent. Largest tehsil by land. Railway town. Chenab Nagar (Rabwah) is a known settlement in this tehsil.
Bhowana (Bhawana) — 879 km², 428,617 people, literacy about 48.9 percent. Most rural of the three. Canal villages toward Jhang.
The district profile counts hundreds of furniture units beside a handful of textile and sugar mills. That is the local industrial fact. Carved doors, beds and jharoka work leave for Karachi, Lahore and the Gulf. Design and export skill are the gap the craft still faces; the timber and the chisel are not missing. Around the workshops the land is almost all irrigated: wheat, sugarcane, fodder and citrus on the Chenab command. M-4 and the Faisalabad–Sargodha road put the town on a dual carriageway that older Jhang tehsil never had.
The 2023 mother-tongue count is about 1.49 million Punjabi speakers — roughly 95 percent. Urdu about 53,000. Pashto about 18,000. Saraiki is a thin row here, unlike Bhakkar or Bahawalpur. This is central-Punjab speech on a river town that used to be administered from Jhang.
The district profile lists about 697 schools and 11 public colleges (boys’, girls’ and commerce) in Chiniot, Lalian and Bhowana. Chenab College and Government Islamia College are the older city names. There is no full public university inside the district. Degree and professional students use Faisalabad — Agriculture University, medical and engineering campuses — and sometimes Sargodha. That pull is geography, not a slight on the local colleges.
DHQ Chiniot is the main public hospital. THQ hospitals operate in Lalian and Bhowana. The profile also lists a TB hospital, three RHCs, about 36 BHUs and a short dispensary chain. A new 125-bed DHQ block has been on the provincial development list. Specialist cases still move to Faisalabad. Private surgical houses sit on Faisalabad Road, Jhang Road and in Lalian.
