Mianwali is where Punjab thins into something else. The Indus turns here. The Salt Range comes down from the north-east. Thal sand begins to think about Bhakkar. Across the river the map becomes Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Speech in the teashop can be Saraiki, Pashto or Punjabi in the same hour.
The 2023 enumeration put 1,798,268 people in 296,339 households on roughly 5,900 km². About one person in five is urban. Reading ability at age ten and above is 62.87 percent — 77.58 percent among men, only 47.63 percent among women. Headquarters town about 129,500. Chashma Barrage holds the Indus. Kalabagh is the gorge town whose name also sits on a long-argued dam file. Salt, hill grazing, wheat, riverine plots, Thal-edge gram. District carved in 1901; later maps moved Layyah away.
Attaullah Esakhelvi took Isa Khel onto cassette players nationwide. The Nawab of Kalabagh, Malik Amir Mohammad Khan, governor of West Pakistan in the early 1960s, is the older political landmark. Military and police families from Daud Khel and the Niazi belt have sent officers out for a century.
Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi was born in Lahore in 1952; the paternal house is Mianwali. Shermankhel Niazis settled this tract long ago. His grandfather, Dr Muhammad Azeem Khan Niazi, built Azeem Manzil in Shermankhel Mohallah; the family graveyard still holds his father and grandparents. He won his first National Assembly seat from Mianwali in 2002 and later campaigns treated the district as ancestral ground. Namal Institute, opened by the foundation he chaired, is the campus tied to his name here. Cousins such as Inamullah Niazi have often backed other parties, so the clan is not a single vote. The local fact is the house, the seat and Namal — not the national legal fight.
Namal is the hill-side campus. Degree colleges in the headquarters, Isa Khel and Piplan. Medicine and engineering still mean Sargodha, Rawalpindi or Lahore. DHQ Mianwali; THQs at Isa Khel and Piplan.
