How this archive treats numbers. Area, coastline, river length and forest cover change with definition and source. Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) census geography covers the four provinces plus Islamabad Capital Territory. Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are listed on this atlas as separate administered units and are not inside the 241.49 million / 796,096 km² PBS census totals. Where sources disagree, both are named.
Geography at a glance
A country of several physical maps
Pakistan occupies the northwestern corner of the Indian subcontinent, in South Asia, with a southern shore on the Arabian Sea. To a physical geographer it is not one landscape. Three large pieces sit side by side: the high mountain north; the Indus plain that holds most of the population; and the plateaus, ranges and deserts of the west and south.
The Indus and its tributaries are the organising river system. The Karakoram, Himalaya and Hindu Kush hold the headwaters and the glaciers. The Balochistan Plateau and the Makran coast face the Iranian Plateau and the Arabian Sea. Historic corridors — the Khyber, Bolan and Khunjerab routes among them — exist because the relief itself funnels movement between Central Asia, South Asia and the sea.
That meeting of realms is the country’s geographic signature. Northern icefields belong with the high Asian mountain systems. The irrigated doabs belong with the greater Indus–Ganges alluvial world. Western Balochistan belongs, in landform and climate, with the Iranian Plateau. The coast belongs with the Arabian Sea. Pakistan is a transition zone among those regions, not a copy of any one of them.
Pakistan lies in South Asia, with a southern shore on the Arabian Sea. Rounded atlas coordinates commonly place the country between about 24° and 37° north latitude and about 61° and 77° east longitude. Exact extents depend on which administered boundaries a map uses; this archive does not treat a single pair of numbers as a legal definition.
Neighbours
India lies to the east and southeast. Afghanistan lies to the west and northwest. Iran lies to the southwest. China lies to the northeast, across the high Karakoram. The Arabian Sea lies to the south.
A Survey of Pakistan map of border lengths (publicly circulated by the department) gives these figures in kilometres: Afghanistan 2,611.560; China 599.100; Iran 909.278; Pakistan–India border 2,100.595; Line of Control 861.493; working boundary 202.000; coastal line 1,058.940. The CIA World Factbook uses a different set (Afghanistan 2,670 km; China 438 km; India 3,190 km; Iran 959 km; coastline 1,046 km) because it combines segments and measures at another convention. This page reports the Survey of Pakistan figures as one official Pakistani statement, and the CIA set as a widely cited international comparison — not as a contest to pick a single “true” kilometre total.
Where territory is disputed or administered under special constitutional arrangements, this archive uses geographic and administrative language — “Pakistan-administered”, “Line of Control”, “working boundary” — rather than a political claim. The physical mountains, rivers and towns remain the subject.
Three great systems meet in the north. The Karakoram holds K2 and the Baltoro 8,000-metre cluster. The Himalaya enters Pakistan as the Nanga Parbat massif, cut off from the Karakoram by the Indus gorge. The Hindu Kush runs along the northwest, with Tirich Mir as its highest summit. Farther south and west the Suleiman, Kirthar and Salt ranges are lower but geographically important: they frame passes, plateaus and the edge of the Indus plain.
Published elevations can differ by metres between surveys. The figures below are the elevations used in standard mountaineering and atlas lists; they are not a substitute for a geodetic certificate.

Mountain systems, not only famous peaks
Peaks sit inside ranges. The Karakoram occupies the high northeast of Gilgit-Baltistan, with the Baltoro–Concordia cluster and the Hunza–Nagar walls. The Himalaya enters Pakistan mainly as the Nanga Parbat massif in Diamer and as the western Himalayan country of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (including the Pir Panjal / Jhelum–Neelum valley world). The Hindu Kush runs through Chitral and the northwest, linking toward Afghanistan. None of these three systems should be collapsed into “the northern mountains” as if they were one range.
Other ranges
The Salt Range of northern Punjab is a folded upland of moderate height, important for geology, salt and the southern edge of the Potohar. The Suleiman Range runs through eastern Balochistan and adjoining districts and helps mark the western rim of the Indus lowlands. The Kirthar Range separates the lower Sindh plain from Balochistan. None of these is an 8,000-metre system; they still structure climate, settlement and routes.
The high mountain north
Gilgit-Baltistan is the geographic heart of Pakistan’s extreme relief: the Karakoram, western Himalaya and, on its western fringe, Hindu Kush country. The upper Indus and its tributaries cut deep valleys. Settlement is linear: terraces, alluvial fans and valley floors, not a high plateau of farms. Chitral and Swat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continue that mountain-valley pattern at slightly lower, still rugged, elevations.

Climate here is altitude climate: long winters, snowmelt hydrology, and a monsoon that is weaker than on the Punjab plain but still important on south-facing Himalayan slopes. Roads close. Glacial lake outburst floods are a local hazard because ice, debris and steep catchments sit above inhabited fans.
A plateau is elevated, relatively level country. A plain is low and depositional. Pakistan has both, and they should not be named as if they were the same landform.
Balochistan Plateau
The largest upland of the country, occupying much of Balochistan. Intermontane basins, dry ranges, and sparse settlement. It belongs geographically with the Iranian Plateau more than with the Indus floodplain. Aridity and long distances, not altitude alone, define daily geography here.
Potohar Plateau
Northern Punjab’s dissected upland, between the Indus and Jhelum, south of the Margalla Hills. Islamabad and Rawalpindi sit on this surface. Ravines, loess and residual hills — not a flat canal colony.
Deosai Plateau
A high-altitude plain in Gilgit-Baltistan, above the treeline, snow-covered much of the year. Often described in local geography as one of the highest plateaus in the region. This archive does not repeat unsourced “second-highest in the world” rankings.
Pishin and related highlands
Northern Balochistan’s Pishin basin and adjoining highlands sit above the Indus plain, in a cooler, orchard-capable climate around the Quetta–Pishin upland. They are plateau-and-basin country, not canal Punjab.
Indus Plain
The alluvial lowland of Punjab and Sindh, built by the Indus and the eastern rivers. Upper tracts in Punjab are canal-irrigated doabs between rivers. Lower Sindh is flatter, hotter, and closer to the delta. Floodplains, levees and old channels still organise villages even where canals have regularised water.
Not every part of Punjab is identical: Potohar is upland; the doabs are irrigated plain; Cholistan is desert. Sindh likewise runs from Kirthar piedmont through rice-and-cotton canal country to the tidal delta. Geography here is a gradient, not a stamp.
The Indus is the trunk. Its eastern Punjab tributaries — Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej — and western mountain tributaries — especially the Kabul, with the Swat, and further south the Kurram and Gomal — make a single basin that feeds irrigation, cities and floods.
River length is easy to misuse. Total length from source to sea is not the same as length inside Pakistan, and encyclopaedias disagree. The CIA World Factbook lists the Indus at 3,610 km (source in China, mouth in Pakistan, course also through India). Other standard references use figures in the 3,000–3,200 km range. This page does not pick a single “exact” kilometre total.

The Indus Basin
The Indus Basin is why most Pakistanis live where they live. Alluvial soils, canal commands and groundwater sit on a river system that begins in ice and ends in a shrinking delta. The Indus Basin Irrigation System — rim stations, Tarbela and Mangla storage, a chain of barrages (Jinnah Barrage near Kalabagh, Chashma, Taunsa, Guddu, Sukkur and Kotri on the Indus stem; Marala on the Chenab; Panjnad at the eastern-rivers confluence) and link canals — is among the world’s largest contiguous irrigation networks. The unbuilt Kalabagh Dam proposal should not be confused with Jinnah Barrage, which already stands near Kalabagh. The Indus River System Authority allocates provincial shares under the 1991 Water Apportionment Accord. WAPDA operates major storage. None of that erases floods: when monsoon rain and snowmelt coincide, the same geometry that waters wheat also spreads water across the plain.
The basin is also international. Headwaters and some tributaries lie in China, India and Afghanistan. The 1960 Indus Waters Treaty allocated the eastern rivers (Ravi, Sutlej, Beas) primarily to India and the western rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab) primarily to Pakistan, with specified exceptions. A geography archive records the hydrology; it does not litigate the treaty.
True desert and semi-arid steppe both exist. Calling every dry district a desert is sloppy. The named deserts below are established geographic regions.
Thar
The Thar extends from western India into southeastern Pakistan, mainly in Sindh (Tharparkar and adjoining districts). Sand, seasonal pasture, and settlements organised around wells and, where it exists, irrigation at the desert edge.
Cholistan
The Pakistani portion of the greater Thar in southern Punjab, especially Bahawalpur Division. Historic forts and caravan routes sit on a desert that the Sutlej–Panjnad irrigation fringe has only partly transformed.
Thal
Between the Indus and Jhelum in western Punjab — a sandy tract inside the riverine frame, not a Sahara analogue. Canal colonisation changed large parts of it; dunes and sparse vegetation remain.
Kharan
A basin desert in western Balochistan (Kharan district and adjoining basins), among the driest settled landscapes in the country. Internally draining, wind-worked, and far from the monsoon core of the Punjab.
Not every famous waterbody is a natural lake. Reservoirs, landslide lakes and seasonal wetlands need different labels.

Glaciers
Pakistan’s large glaciers sit in the Karakoram, Himalaya and Hindu Kush, with the greatest ice volume in the Karakoram of Gilgit-Baltistan. Baltoro, Biafo, Hispar, Batura and Passu are among the named ice streams. The Biafo–Hispar system is one of the longest non-polar glacial corridors on Earth. Siachen is a large glacier in the eastern Karakoram; it is also a militarised, disputed zone — this page records the ice, not a battlefield narrative.
Glaciers here are the high reservoir of the Indus. Scientific literature documents both retreat in some Himalayan catchments and more complex, sometimes locally advancing or stable, behaviour in parts of the Karakoram (the so-called Karakoram anomaly in research papers). This archive does not convert that literature into a single national “all glaciers are vanishing at rate X” slogan.
Pakistan does not have one climate. Latitude, the Arabian Sea, the monsoon, western disturbances, and above all elevation produce arid coast and desert, hot irrigated plains, continental western highlands, and alpine north. Pakistan Meteorological Department station maps (1981–2012 climate normals and later research using PMD series) show that contrast clearly: mean conditions in the south and centre are much warmer than in the mountain north; annual rainfall can exceed 1,500–2,000 mm on some northern slopes and fall below a few hundred millimetres in much of Balochistan and lower Sindh.
What drives the weather
The summer monsoon (roughly July–September, lingering later in some districts) is the main rainfall season for the eastern plains and many northern slopes. Western disturbances — extra-tropical systems that enter from the west, often via Afghanistan and Iran — bring winter and spring precipitation that matters for rabi crops and for snowpack in the high catchments. Continentality (distance from the sea) and the blocking and lifting of air by the mountain wall explain why Quetta’s winter is not Karachi’s winter, and why Skardu is not Multan.
Seasons — with a warning
A student timeline of winter, spring, hot summer, monsoon and post-monsoon/autumn is useful on the Punjab plain. It is a poor description of Chitral in January or of Gwadar in August. Intensity and timing shift with elevation and with distance from the monsoon core. Heatwaves are a plains and urban hazard; heavy snow and avalanche are a mountain one.
Rainfall patterns
There is no honest single “national rainfall average” that describes farms. Northern mountain and submontane belts take both monsoon and western-disturbance rain. Central and southern Punjab depend heavily on the summer monsoon plus canal water. The lower Indus and much of Balochistan are arid to hyper-arid. Coastal humidity is not the same as coastal rainfall: Karachi can feel wet and still record modest annual totals compared with Murree or parts of Hazara.

Altitude climate: cold winters, snowpack, short summers. Rain and snow from western disturbances plus a weaker monsoon on some south faces.
Punjab plains
Hot summers, monsoon core, foggy winters in the east. Canal water matters as much as rain for crops.
Sindh
Hotter and, away from the northern canal belt, more arid. Delta and coast add humidity and tidal weather that the upper doabs do not have.
Balochistan & west
Mostly arid to hyper-arid plateau and basin. Quetta winters are cold; the Makran coast is milder. Monsoon is unreliable here.
Pakistan’s coast runs from the Iranian frontier at Gwadar/Gwatar Bay to the Indian side of Sir Creek. It is not one beach. The Makran (Balochistan) coast is rocky, uplifted, and sparsely settled except at fishing towns and the port of Gwadar. The Sindh coast includes Karachi’s urban shore and, eastward, the Indus Delta’s creeks, mudflats and mangroves.
Coastline length is a classic “it depends how you measure” number. Survey of Pakistan’s border map lists a coastal line of 1,058.940 km. The CIA World Factbook lists 1,046 km. IUCN Pakistan coastal handbooks have used about 990 km, sometimes split as roughly 270 km Sindh and 720 km Makran. Different rulers on a wiggly shore produce different totals. This page does not invent a fourth figure.
Indus Delta
The delta is a tidal, sediment-starved, mangrove-fringed plain in southern Sindh. Reduced downstream flow below Kotri, sea-level pressure, and sediment trapped upstream in reservoirs have been widely documented as stresses on creeks, agriculture and fisheries. The delta is a working ecosystem — mangroves, shrimp and fish nurseries, wood and grazing — not an empty waste. It is also one of Pakistan’s most climate-exposed geographic regions.
Karachi sits west of the main deltaic maze but is still a coastal metropolis: harbour, reclaimed front, and monsoon-plus-drain flood risk. Ports (Karachi, Port Qasim, Gwadar) are geographic facts as much as economic ones: they exist because the Arabian Sea is the country’s only ocean frontage. The Makran towns and the Sindh creek settlements are two different coastal geographies sharing one sea.
Altitude, rainfall and temperature stack ecosystems: permanent snow and ice; alpine meadow; coniferous forest on monsoon-facing slopes; subtropical pine and broadleaf; dry subtropical scrub; riverine forest in old floodplains; irrigated farmland that is now the dominant lowland land cover; true desert; and mangrove/coastal wetland.
Forest statistics are definition-sensitive. FAO / World Bank forest-area series put Pakistan’s forest at about 36,019 km² in 2023, on the order of 4.7% of land area under that definition. Other national and remote-sensing studies report a band of roughly 4–5% depending on whether they use the 796,000 km² PBS land frame or a larger administered-area denominator, and on how they class scrub. This page records that Pakistan is a low-forest country by those measures, and that the remaining forest is concentrated in the north and in fragments of riverine and mangrove woodland — not that a single percentage is eternal.

Coniferous & Himalayan
Pine, fir and related stands on monsoon-facing slopes of Hazara, Swat, Dir, Galliat and parts of AJK. Altitude and aspect matter more than province labels.
Scrub & dry forest
Thorn and dry subtropical woodland on Potohar, Salt Range edges and much of the western foothills. Often omitted from casual “forest” talk.
Riverine & irrigated
Bela and riverine remnants along the Indus and eastern rivers, now a fragment of a once-wider floodplain woodland, beside today’s canal farmland.
Mangrove & juniper
Tidal mangroves of the Indus Delta and Karachi creeks; dry juniper of Ziarat — two forests that share almost nothing except the word “tree.”
Mangroves of the Indus Delta and Karachi creeks are a separate forest geography: salt-tolerant, tidal, and economically tied to fisheries. Conifers of Galliat, Swat, Dir and the Himalayan outer ranges are another. Dry juniper of Ziarat is a third. Lumping them as “the forest” hides the map.
Pakistani agriculture is a geographic system: meltwater and monsoon into the Indus, barrages into canals, canals onto alluvial soils, and tubewells into a falling water table where surface supply is short. Punjab’s doabs are the classic canal colony landscape. Sindh’s commands are hotter, with rice in the north-centre and a long struggle with waterlogging and salinity. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa mixes irrigated valley floors with rain-fed slopes. Balochistan’s high-value orchards and karez/tubewell belts are islands in an arid matrix. Deserts support pastoral systems and, at their irrigated edges, new commands.
Rain-fed (barani) Potohar and the Himalayan foothills are not canal Punjab. Geography, not only policy, explains why a wheat map and a mango map and a date map are not the same map.
NDMA and PMD plan around a hazard map that follows relief. River plains flood when the Indus and its tributaries spill. Mountain districts see flash floods, landslides and avalanches. Arid Balochistan and parts of Sindh and southern Punjab face drought and extreme heat. The coast has cyclone and coastal-flood risk, historically including the 1945 Makran tsunami. Northern valleys face glacial lake outburst floods. None of these is a random “disaster”; each has a landform.
Earthquakes follow plate geometry. The Indian Plate collides with Eurasia: that collision lifted the Himalaya, Karakoram and associated ranges and still loads faults. The 1935 Quetta earthquake and the 2005 Kashmir (Muzaffarabad) earthquake are the two modern events most students meet; they are not the only ones. Western Makran is a subduction margin — different geology, still seismic. A school-level statement is enough: Pakistan is on an active collision zone, so building codes and slope stability are geographic problems, not only engineering ones.
Why Pakistan has such dramatic landscapes
The short geologic story is collision. India moved north into Eurasia. The crust thickened into the Himalaya–Karakoram–Hindu Kush wall. Rivers cut gorges as the mountains rose. West of the Indus, older plateau and fold-belt rocks of Balochistan record a different, still active, deformation. Salt Range folds, Makran accretion and the Chaman fault system are parts of the same plate story at lower elevation. Students do not need a full orogeny textbook: uplift plus erosion plus a giant river equals the map in the hero schematic.
The 2010 and 2022 monsoon floods showed the plains’ exposure: intense rain on a full river system, with kacha settlements on floodplains. Hazard geography is also social geography — who lives on the katcha, the fan, the filled creek. NDMA seasonal plans and PMD warnings exist because the landform repeats the risk.
Pakistan has four provinces — Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan — plus Islamabad Capital Territory. Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are administered territories with their own elected houses; they are not provinces in the constitutional sense used for the four. PBS census totals that say “Pakistan 241.49 million” refer to the four provinces plus ICT unless a table explicitly adds AJK and GB.
The 25th Amendment (2018) merged the former FATA agencies into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as districts. A 2010 map of “tribal areas” is therefore an outdated administrative map. Districts continue to split; this atlas’s district list is the place for that detail.
Karakoram, western Himalaya, high glaciers, upper Indus.
PBS / Economic Survey area for “Pakistan” is 796,096 km² (four provinces + ICT). That is the figure this site’s homepage also uses. Adding AJK and GB produces a larger administered-area total; those two frames must not be mixed in one sentence.
Most populous province (PBS 2023: 127,688,922). Geographic core is the five-river alluvial plain and its doabs, organised by canals. That is not the whole map: Potohar is dissected upland; the Salt Range is folded geology; Thal and Cholistan are dry tracts. Explore Punjab and its districts.

Islamabad Capital Territory
The capital sits on the Potohar, against the Margalla Hills, with the Soan drainage in the wider basin. Elevation is moderate hill-and-plateau, not alpine. The planned city faces Punjab and, across the hills and motorway, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Climate is a foothill variant of northern Punjab: hotter than Murree, cooler than southern Punjab, with monsoon rain and occasional western-disturbance winter rain. PBS 2023: 2,363,863 people; density about 2,609 persons per km² in the census report.
Azad Jammu and Kashmir
AJK is Himalayan valley country: Jhelum, Neelum, forests, steep slopes, and earthquake exposure (2005). Muzaffarabad stands where the Neelum meets the Jhelum. Use “administered territory” here, not “province.”
Gilgit-Baltistan
GB is the high-mountain unit: K2 and the Baltoro 8,000ers, Nanga Parbat in Diamer, Rakaposhi above Nagar, the Hunza and Gilgit corridors, Skardu’s basin, and the glacier store of the upper Indus. Khunjerab links to China. This is not “northern KP”; it is a separate administered geography with a different altitude, hazard and settlement pattern.
Cities below are described by site, not ranked by a single unsourced population number. Karachi is the largest urban agglomeration; it is split across several census districts. PBS 2023 urban share for the four provinces plus ICT was 38.82%.
Twin cities on the Potohar. Islamabad is the planned federal capital against the Margallas; Rawalpindi is the older basin city and garrison. Together they occupy the north-south corridor between Punjab and the mountain approaches.

Karachi
Arabian Sea metropolis on a rocky–alluvial coast west of the main delta. Harbour geography, sea breeze, and drain-and-monsoon flooding. See Sindh district pages such as Karachi South.
Lower and middle Sindh Indus cities. Sukkur’s barrage is a geographic fact: it is where canal Sindh is regulated. Hyderabad sits at the transition toward the deltaic south.
Valley towns of the upper Indus system: Gilgit at the Hunza–Gilgit confluence world; Skardu in the Baltistan basin under the Karakoram. High-altitude desert-mountain climate, irrigation from tributary melt.

Population and settlement geography
PBS 2023 (CCI-approved): 241,499,431 in the four provinces plus ICT. Punjab holds about 53% of that total; Sindh about 23%; KP about 17%; Balochistan about 6%; ICT under 1%. People concentrate on the irrigated Indus plain and in a handful of metro regions (Karachi, Lahore–Gujranwala belt, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi–Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Hyderabad). Mountains and deserts are inhabited but at low density, along valleys, fans and wells. That is a geographic distribution, not an accident of preference.
Survey of Pakistan is the national mapping agency, headquartered with the Surveyor General in Rawalpindi. It inherits a surveying tradition that, on the subcontinent, runs through the Survey of India and was reorganised for Pakistan after 1947. Today it states a mandate in topographic mapping, geodetic control, photogrammetry, remote sensing and geospatial data — paper maps still exist, but the work is digital.
Colonial baseline
Triangulation, topographic sheets and cadastral survey created the first systematic maps of rivers, contours and settlements. Many district boundaries still echo that archive.
1947
Survey assets and responsibilities were split. Pakistan had to map a new state, including frontiers that were themselves new.
Late 20th century
Aerial photography, then satellite imagery, then GIS. WAPDA, irrigation departments and geological survey built thematic layers — canals, minerals, basins — on top of the topographic base.
2000s–2020s
GPS, remote sensing and national spatial data efforts. PBS used digital geographic frames for the 2023 census. NDMA and PMD use geospatial tools for hazard mapping. SUPARCO and other agencies supply satellite support. GIS here is a civic instrument: census blocks, flood extents, urban sprawl — not only a military or academic toy.
Geography and the 2023 digital census
The 7th Population and Housing Census (2023) was Pakistan’s first digital census. PBS, with NADRA, NTC, SUPARCO and provincial administration, enumerated from March to May 2023 (some northern areas later because of snow). PBS states that GIS was used for real-time monitoring, coverage and enumeration-area mapping. Digital mapping of enumeration areas is census geography: it is how households were found, not a rewriting of provincial borders. Do not confuse a census block with a district, or a 2023 tablet track with a settled international boundary.
Pakistan in the age of GIS
Geographic information systems, GPS, satellite imagery and remote sensing now sit under census work, flood extents, urban sprawl, canal commands and disaster maps. Survey of Pakistan’s stated mandate includes geospatial data, photogrammetry and a national geodetic network. PBS GIS frames, NDMA hazard layers and PMD station maps are civic tools. This archive does not host a live map API; it points readers to those official geographic institutions.
